CNDLS coordinates support for educational technologies related to faculty, research, and the curriculum at Georgetown University. While partnering with UIS and Gelardin-whose staffs train faculty and students in various programs and software packages-CNDLS works specifically with custom applications and video media for instructional design. CNDLS can tailor applications to meet the needs of a specific department, project, or faculty member. We also provide general technology support and development with such educational applications as Blackboard, Blogs, Wikis, and the Poster Tool.

  • Eddie Maloney leads the educational technology team and is a programmer and multimedia developer himself. He has led CNDLS' efforts to develop and integrate blogs and wikis in the classroom, and provided web development support on such projects as A Living Archive and Dante.

Multimedia and Course Management Systems
As part of its mission to support Educational Technologies, CNDLS provides support for Georgetown University's course management system, Blackboard, and other uses of educational technology on campus, including innovative uses of PDAs and multimedia presentations using digital audio and video, Macromedia Flash, Microsoft Powerpoint. Support for PDAs, Multimedia, and Blackboard is provided by:

  • Vartan Akchyan provides video production services to Georgetown University faculty members and graduate students interested in incorporating new technologies into their teaching. He also provides Blackboard Course Management System support to the campus community. He graduated from Communication, Culture, and Technology Program at Georgetown University, for which he produced the documentary Jews in Armenia as his thesis.
  • Brian Boston works almost exclusively with the Medical Center to facilitate technology in health education, and has pioneered such projects as Pocket Pearls that use PDA technology to aid medical students in their residencies. He is one of our experts in XML, a language that allows text to be coded according to structure, used by such sites as Project Gutenberg and Georgetown professor Penn Szittya's Wyclif online.
  • Peter Janssens brings an expertise related to audio and video files, and is able to make such resources available via streaming server. While he specializes in assisting faculty and graduate students in foreign languages and linguistics, if something needs to be delivered via the Internet, Peter can make it happen. He created, maintains, and is ever expanding the LLT Media Catalog and Online Materials.
  • Susan Pennestri provides technical support, project consulting, and hardware and software support to the faculty, staff and students of foreign language departments. In addition to managing the many audio, visual, and digital resources in the LLT lab, she oversees the lab's circulation management system and online Media Catalog, acts as a key member of the Blackboard support team, and leads training classes and services on the main campus.

Web Development
In addition to standard multimedia and course management system applications, CNDLS also assists faculty with basic web page creation. Many Georgetown faculty members have worked with us to create custom applications that require more advanced design and development in ColdFusion, PHP, and XML. In addition to the creation of unique applications for a particular faculty research or teaching project, CNDLS also designs and develops generic applications for teaching and learning, such as blogs, wikis, and our poster tool. The CNDLS Web Application Development team includes:

  • Michael Dumlao is responsible for CNDLS' visual communications and information architecture in print and on the web. He specializes in the structure of information, user interface and accessibility, and the role of design in both. He works with individual faculty members, departments, and CNDLS web applications including Dante & the Journey to Freedom, Society for the Study of Narrative Literature, and the current CNDLS website.
  • Bill Garr works with individual faculty members on specialized projects, such as Frank Ambrosio's Dante project, Ed Van Keuren's Optics Web, or Diana Donahoe's TeachingLaw online textbook. His background in film and science education informs his work with Flash and helps him improve the interface of these applications.
  • Rob Pongsajapan focuses on information architecture and web development (XHTML, CSS, ColdFusion and PHP).
  • Rosie Fitzpatrick oversees such web applications as blogs and wikis, as well as the poster tool, which was built especially for CNDLS in collaboration with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She is also responsible for such in-house innovations as the Blackboard ticket tracking program and the administrative database. As the engine of practical web development at CNDLS, Rosie designs all of these applications so they can be customized for other uses and organizations.
