Access to Blackboard

What do I need to access Blackboard?

In order to access Blackboard, you need:

  • A computer with Internet access
  • A browser with cookies, JavaScript and Java enabled
  • An active Georgetown University NetID and password
  • Georgetown University email account

Blackboard is accessible via most major web browsers. This includes Firefox for Windows and Mac OS, Internet Explorer for Windows, and Safari for Mac OS.

I cannot log in to Blackboard. What should I do?

Are you typing in your university NetID and password correctly? Make sure your caps lock key is disabled. Do you know your password? Have you set up your email routing? Are cookies and Javascript enabled in your browser?

You must have an active Georgetown University NetID and NetID password in order to use Blackboard. If you do not know your NetID, you can find it by looking up your record in the university's online directory: http://contact.georgetown.edu.

If you do not know your NetID password or need to reset it, present an ID in person to the University Information Services (UIS) Help Desk in St. Mary's Hall or fax a photocopy of your ID to the UIS Help Desk at 202-687-1162. A form for faxing can be found at http://netid.georgetown.edu/resetform.html. You can call the Help Desk at 202-687-4949 or send an email to help@georgetown.edu to confirm the receipt of your fax.

After you know your NetID and password, you should check your email routing to make sure you can receive emails from your instructors. If your email address does not appear as a link in the online directory, then you have not set your email routing and you cannot access Blackboard (note: students who have chosen to not be listed in the online directory will not appear). Please follow this link to set up your email routing: https://netid-mgmt.georgetown.edu/mailrouting

Note: You must wait one business day after setting your email routing for the first time before you can access Blackboard.

If you have an active NetID and have set your email routing but still cannot access Blackboard, make sure you have cookies and Javascript enabled in your browser. You can also try logging in using a different browser.

I am a Consortium student. Can I access Blackboard?

Yes, but only once you are officially enrolled at Georgetown University. The required user NetID to access Blackboard and other university services is generated for Consortium students only after Georgetown's Registrar's Office has processed your paperwork and you are enrolled in the course(s).

You can check Georgetown's online directory each morning at http://contact.georgetown.edu/ by searching for your name to see if your NetID has been generated. Only call the Registrar's Office after you have confirmed that your home school has forwarded the paperwork and sufficient time to process it has passed.

Once you find your name in the directory (note: you can only see the actual NetID from an on-campus computer), you must have the NetID password reset by presenting an ID in person to the University Information Services Help Desk in St. Mary's Hall or by faxing a photocopy of an ID to 202-687-1162. A form for faxing can be found at http://netid.georgetown.edu/resetform.html. You can call the Help Desk at 202-687-4949 or send an email to help@georgetown.edu to confirm receipt of your fax.

After you know your NetID and password, you will need to set up your email routing. Go to https://netid-mgmt.georgetown.edu/mailrouting to set your routing to your home school's email account.

Note: Once you set your NetID password, it takes one business day for the changes to take effect before you can access Blackboard.

Do students have access to Blackboard after they leave Georgetown?

No. When students graduate or otherwise leave (e.g. Leave of Absence) the university, their student affiliation is made inactive in the university's NetID system, at which point they can no longer access Blackboard. For graduating students, this occurs soon after the end of semester (e.g., by commencement weekend).
