Apprenticeship in Teaching Program

Authentic Teaching Tasks

Videotaped Teaching Practice

To complete the AT Program, you are required to videotape a practice teaching session. It is imperative that you schedule your videotaped teaching practice far in advance. Please see information below on scheduling.

If you are teaching or serving as a Teaching Assistant, you may arrange the videotaped practice session of your own class. To minimize interruptions in the classroom, CNDLS staff will videotape the entire lesson.

If you have not and probably will not teach during your graduate career at Georgetown, we have listed below other teaching venues for you to arrange an audience. Depending on the venue, CNDLS staff will videotape anywhere from ten minutes to one hour of your teaching. If you are unable to arrange an alternative teaching venue, CNDLS will arrange a microteaching session during which you will give a brief lesson to a small audience.

After you deliver the lesson, CNDLS staff, faculty, and/or experienced peers will review the videotape and schedule a time to discuss specific and descriptive feedback based on your delivery, board work, and classroom interaction. In addition, CNDLS will provide you with a CD of your videotaped practice.

Other Venues to Practice Teaching:

Please think creatively about possible venues before contacting CNDLS to arrange a microteaching session. You might consider:

  1. Arranging a review session in your discipline

Contact your Director of Graduate Studies or the Director of Undergraduate Studies to inquire about the possibility of leading a review session.

  2. Facilitating a Book Discussion with the Diversity Action Council's (DAC) One Book, One Georgetown

Log on to the DAC Book Discussion Leaders to sign-up, or contact Christy Anthony to learn more about being a discussion leader.

  3. Leading a study session at the Academic Resource Center (ARC)

Contact Shelly Habel (CNDLS, ARC) to inquire about needs at the ARC.

  4. Arranging to guest lecture in another classroom

Contact your Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate Studies, or other departmental faculty.

  5. Planning a topic discussion or other academic program with Residence Life's Living-Learning Communities (LLC)

Contact Mindy McWilliams (CNDLS, LLC Committee) to inquire about opportunities.
